New York Yankees fans react to team sending pitchers Greg Weissert and Ian Hamilton to Triple-A: "Trade incoming" "How does Weissert not make it"

The New York Yankees' Opening Day roster came a bit closer to being official Tuesday. The team sent pitchers Greg Weissert and Ian Hamilton to their Triple-A team in Scranton-Wilkes Barre.

Amidst a day of confusion over which outfielders the team was demoting or releasing, the Weissert and Hamilton demotions at least brought some clarity to the pitching staff.

Weissert's move disappointed many Yankees fans. Weissert made his major-league debut in the second half of the 2022 season and went 3-0 in 12 games with a WHIP of 0.971. His 5.56 ERA was bloated by two appearances in which he gave up three runs apiece, though he only gave up one run across his other 10 appearances.

Weissert was 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA and 0.955 WHIP in seven Spring Training games.

Many New York Yankees observers still feel a trade is coming. Reports on Monday stated that general manager Brian Cashman has not ruled out making a move to possibly reinforce the team's beleaguered pitching staff before Opening Day. Three of the Yankees' expected Opening Day starting staff, Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, and Frankie Montas, are out due to injury.

@TalkinYanks @MaxTGoodman Huh. No sh*t. Must be a trade in the works?

Hamilton is a less-surprising demotion, given that he has pitched just 15 major league games over three seasons with the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins before coming to the Yankees this offseason.

He has a 4.91 lifetime ERA to go with a 1.43 WHIP, but he logged a 0.00 ERA and 0.84 WHIP over seven Spring Training games.

The full, official Yankees bullpen has yet to be announced. Most fans seem to realize that this isn't the last time they'll see Weissert or Hamilton.

And, of course, some New York Yankees fans just cry out in obscenity. It could be about Weissert, or Cashman, or Aaron Hicks, or Josh Donaldson, or that their team hasn't won 52 world championships.

On a day in which both outfielders Estevan Florial and Rafael Ortega were reportedly getting the boot from the New York Yankees, it turns out both players will join the team on the flight from Florida to New York. In a twist, it is outfielder Willie Calhoun, who played for the Texas Rangers last season, who is getting demoted to Triple-A.

There appears to be only one spot left on the roster for Florial or Ortega. With the former out of minor league options and the latter not yet on the 40-man roster, manager Aaron Boone appears to be taking his decision on who to keep down to the last possible moment.
