New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres continues to win fans over after his miraculous start: "Man is almost 3x Donaldson's OPS"
Yankee Stadium is a far cry from the fields of Caracas, Venezuela, where Gleyber Torres learned to play the game. The second baseman is lighting it up for the most famous team in the world.
Torres, 26, impressed the Yankees in 2022 when he hit .257/.310/.451 with 24 home runs and 76 RBIs. In addition to solidifying his role as the team's starter at second base, Gleyber Torres also had his best offensive campaign since 2019.
After signing a one-year deal for $9.95 million to avoid arbitration at the last minute, fans and management were expecting another solid return on investment from Torres.
It did not take long for Gleyber to prove his worth. In the Yankees' opening day game against the San Francisco Giants, Torres became the second Yankees player of the season after Aaron Judge to hit a home run. Torres took Giants starter Logan Webb deep to right field for a 2-run shot on the opening day.
His 100th career home run came in a subsequent game against the Philadelphia Phillies. As of April 6th, Torres has a pair of home runs, 5 RBIs, and a slash line of .421/.560/.789. He also leads the MLB in stolen bases with 5 of them.

Fans have taken to Twitter to express their appreciation for Torres, who has the highest average and number of RBIs on the team so far in 2023. Some have even compared Torres to Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani.
The infield situation for the New York Yankees was complicated as the team stared down the new season. Rookie sensation Anthony Volpe was threatening Gleyber Torres' at second base after a strong preseason.
Luckily for Torres, manager Aaron Boone found a way to slot Volpe in at shortstop. While Volpe's debut at shortstop displaced 2022 starter Isiah Kiner-Falefa, the Yankees seem to have a formation that is working, and there is no better evidence for that than the performance of Torres.
Gleyber Torres has a chance at a career season
Torres' agility on the field can lead some to forget the strong amount of power that this man possesses in his bat. A 38-home run hitter in 2019, Torres can easily equate with hard-hitting teammates like Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton if he gets sufficient offensive opportunities this year.
