"Obviously we didn't do enough the last couple of nights" - Yankees manager Aaron Boone reacts after disappointing loss vs Nationals
Manager Aaron Boone shared his thoughts after the New York Yankees fell to a 5-2 loss to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.
The Yankees started their series against the Nationals with a win, but lost two consecutive games and jeopardized their position on top of the division. The Bronx Bombers put in another underwhelming performance on Wednesday and Boone was quick to admit to their shortcomings after the game (via Yes Network):
"Obviously we didn't do enough the last couple of nights with pushing runs across... just one of those ones where we weren't able to finish off some rallies,” Boone said.
Aaron Boone, who spent 13 seasons in MLB as a player, has been the Yankees manager for the past seven years. In that time, the former first baseman has guided the club to the playoffs in each season except last year, when they had one of the worst seasons in franchise history.
Over the regular season so far, Boone's Yankees have been largely impressive, maintaining their position at the top of the AL East for the majority of the season. However, their lead at the top of the table has been reduced to half a game after two consecutive losses to the Nationals this week.
They have been poor in defense, while their star-studded offense has failed to step up in the last two games. It is no surprise that Boone is unhappy with the result and is looking to bounce back in the next series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Aaron Boone praises Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore for containing Yankees offense
Apart from Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, the New York Yankees offense has struggled for long stints this year. While Giancarlo Stanton recently rediscovered his form, the same cannot be said for the rest of the lineup, which was contained by Washington Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore on Wednesday. After the game, Boone took the chance to applaud the pitcher's performance:
“He's got a good arm, big arm... He did a good job for them," Boone said.
MacKenzie Gore holds a 4.45 ERA, which is average at best. However, he was able to restrict the Yankees bats to two runs and six hits over six innings, while recording six strikeouts.
