"Obviously they are going for Juan Soto" - Giants HOFer expects Buster Posey to target Yankees superstar in free agency

Juan Soto, after a dominant regular season and an impressive postseason (that isn't quite over yet), is going to have so many suitors on the free agency market.

It is expected that the New York Yankees will re-sign him, but they will have no shortage of competitors and there will almost assuredly be a bidding war for his services.

Among those teams is the San Francisco Giants. They have been aggressive in attacking star free agents lately, but have come up short on all those occasions. New president of baseball operations Buster Posey is unlikely to end that trend, according to one team Hall of Famer.

Former right fielder Hunter Pence made an appearance on "The Chris Rose Rotation" on the JM Baseball YouTube channel and said this on the matter (12:03 - 12:36):

"Obviously, I think they're going for Juan Soto. He is going to change whatever franchise, he's going to create a lot of history. He is an exceptional talent, he's extremely clutch in the postseason. He immediately makes you a contender just by adding him."

The Giants have tried and failed to sign Carlos Correa, Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge in recent free agencies. This has been frustrating, but it has largely kept them from tying up big money. That could prove useful if the Giants have to outbid the Yankees.

The New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays and several other teams are expected to give Soto a serious offer in free agency after the World Series ends. The Giants are going to be one of them in Pence's eyes.

Surprising team expected to enter Juan Soto sweepstakes

Across from Juan Soto right now, and in the way of his World Series goal, is the Los Angeles Dodgers. Next year, he could be on that side. According to reports, the Dodgers are expected to jump into the fray for Soto.

This may seem impossible since they spent $1 billion last year, but the deferral of Shohei Ohtani's contract makes it possible. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that it's financially possible.

The only question is whether or not he wants to move back west again, since he already played for the San Diego Padres. Also, if he wants to jump ship to a team that, depending on the next few games of the World Series, might have defeated him in the championship.

He would be viewed similarly to Kevin Durant in the NBA for a move like that if the Yankees lose the Series.
