"October is the worst month of the year if you’re not playing" - CEO Sam Kennedy after Red Sox miss playoffs

The Boston Red Sox are not in the playoffs this year. After a mid-season run put them into contention for a Wild Card berth, they sputtered and ended up on the outside looking in. This is, in the eyes of the team's CEO Sam Kennedy, not what they want.

He said that the goal for his team every single year is to play in October. This year, the Red Sox are just watching. It's one of the most enjoyable months for baseball fans, but Kennedy said the opposite for his team.

Via the Boston Globe, he lamented:

“October is the worst month of the year if you’re not playing."

Kennedy also admitted that talk was cheap and that these words were "hollow" unless they could turn the organization around and win again.

Trevor Story, other Red Sox stars open up on future

Missing out on the playoffs, while it has happened the last three years, is not what the Boston Red Sox want to be known for. They want to contend, and it may take some big offseason moves to get them there.

Two-time All-Star Trevor Story, once a big signing that the Sox made, said via the Boston Globe that adding talent is always good:

“Given the recent history, I guess that’s a fair question. I’m always on board with adding. It’s never bad having more talent."

He was asked about the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles adding Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes respectively last offseason, and he believes the Red Sox may need to do that.

Story added:

“We’re the Boston Red Sox. I think [adding] is what you expect. We’d love to see that be the case. Hopefully, now that we have a pretty solid core of young guys, it’s a perfect opportunity to add.”

Reliever Chris Martin said other teams are making moves now, and that fans want the Red Sox to follow suit. Martin added that it's something that makes the Sox a good organization because they strive to give fans what they want.
