Padres star Jackson Merrill works on power with late-night bench press as offseason training continues

This isn't the first time that Merrill has given fans a glimpse into his offseason training, as he posted another story to his Instagram in early December. Since no actual MLB games are being played this month, this is the closest fans get to seeing their favorite players.

Merrill is getting his offseason workout done in a training facility, and working on his power is clearly a priority.

It's common for MLB players to look to gain strength during the offseason, but not every player is showcasing his work on social media. The videos and images from Merrill should get fans of the San Diego Padres excited, but getting stronger in December is only a small step.

Jackson Merrill gives Padres a powerful lineup

The New York Mets recently signed Juan Soto, giving them a dynamic duo with him playing alongside Francisco Lindor. Other MLB teams have great lineups as well, and the San Diego Padres could boast a trio who is second to none. Jackson Merrill is going to be in the middle of the San Diego lineup, surrounded by Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado.

The Padres are looking to get past the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West Division, and they will need to get it done on the strength of their offense. San Diego got a big rookie campaign from Merrill in 2024, but it's looking for him to take the next step.

Jackson Merrill played in 156 games during his rookie season, finishing in second place in the NL Rookie of the Year voting to Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Merrill belted 24 home runs as an everyday outfielder and also provided a batting average of .292. Those are not stats that many rookies are putting up, and that's why the Padres have some high hopes for their young star.
