Paul Skenes' custom-made cleats from Players’ Weekend hit auction block, all proceeds to benefit Pirates ace's charitable cause
Paul Skenes is a responsible athlete ready to give back to the community. The Pirates rookie recently auctioned his in-game custom cleats to raise funds for the Gary Sinise Foundation.
Skenes' choice of charitable organization is no surprise due to his Air Force background. The Gary Sinise Foundation aids the country's defenders, veterans and first responders.
At the start of the season, Skenes pledged to raise over $100,000 for the organization. He also donates $100 for every strikeout he earns. Nearing the final stretch to reach his goal, the starting pitcher put his cleats up for sale.
Inspired by the Gary Sinise Foundation, the shoes have camo print with a U.S. flag on the back. The Nike logo bears the flag in alternating colors on each shoe. The name of the organization is printed on the footwear's side.
The shoe is currently the highest bid upon item at the Players' Weekend Auction. After 24 bids, the item was priced at $2810 with a closing date on the 8th of September. Other players who put items up for sale were Austin Riley and Willy Adames.
Paul Skenes remains the frontrunner for NL Rookie of the Year
Despite heavy opposition, Paul Skenes will likely become the National League Rookie of the Year. He faces competition from the San Diego Padres' Jackson Merrill who leads all rookies in several offensive categories, including OPS+ and home runs.
However, Skenes has been dominant on the mound. The first-year phenom owns an ERA of 2.23. Perhaps more importantly, though, the 22-year-old's value to the Pirates' wins is exemplified by his 4.7 Wins Above Replacement (WAR). A solid season-ending run in September can help secure the coveted award for the Pirates rookie.
