Pete Alonso’s Hot Stove: MLB insider predicts possible landing spots for 4x All-Star slugger amid contract concerns

Pete Alonso remains one of the most intriguing players in MLB free agency. He is one of the biggest names and has had good production over the last several years, but the market has not been as hot as was expected.

MLB insider Jeff Passan reported that some teams are concerned about giving Alonso a long-term deal. He's 30, but the profile, which includes his age and the fact that he's right-handed in the field and at the plate, is concerning to a variety of suitors.

However, on the other hand, teams see a lot of value in signing Alonso to a shorter contract, something like two or three years. At that rate, the concern drops off. Per Passan, multiple teams are looking at Alonso right now.

Those include the New York Yankees, New York Mets and others. Alonso hasn't gone totally without attention, but his most aggressive, perhaps an inaccurate descriptor, suitors have been New York teams.

Passan believes the Yankees could push further for Alonso as the market builds and that the Mets still want to bring him back despite spending big elsewhere. Other teams would likely throw their hat into the ring if it happened, but a bidding war between the two (a la Juan Soto) could occur.

What teams need Pete Alonso the most?

Since Pete Alonso is not on the roster right now, the New York Mets need him perhaps more than any other team. He is also a hole in the lineup that needs to be replaced.

With only Oswaldo Cabrera and Ben Rice capable of playing the position, the New York Yankees also need a first baseman, and Alonso fits their lineup.

The Detroit Tigers, ranked 28th in Fangraphs' first-base depth for 2025, could also use a player like Alonso. He is a veteran who could also mentor younger players like Spencer Torkelson.

The Milwaukee Brewers (27th), Houston Astros (26th), Arizona Diamondbacks (19th) and San Francisco Giants (17th) could also be in the mix for Alonso at first base for the 2025 season.
