"Pete Alonso wanted Aaron Judge money" - MLB insider on Mets 4x All-Star's unrealistic $300M+ demand collapsing extension talks

Pete Alonso is one of baseball's most prolific home run hitters. The New York Mets' first baseman has won the Home Run Derby twice and only sits behind Aaron Judge for total home runs since 2019, with 223.

Despite his production, Alonso and the New York Mets haven't agreed to a long-term contract extension. The 29-year-old is slated to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

That said, MLB insider John Harper explained in an episode of Blair & Barker that New York wanted to extend Alonso last season, but his demands were too high.

"He switched agents, went to Boras, so at that point, everybody knew that he wanted every last dollar [37:45]."

"The Mets were willing to extend him a year ago as they did with McNeil, but the word was he wanted Judge money. He's not Aaron Judge, so they couldn't get together on a contract, so he's playing it out [37:51]."

Unfortunately for Alonso, he has struggled to perform at the same level as Aaron Judge this season, which could hurt his chances of getting a contract in the $300 million range.

Through 145 games this season, Alonso has posted a .239 batting average with 31 home runs and 79 RBIs. Despite earning an All-Star selection, it remains uncertain how many clubs would sign the first baseman to a lucrative deal.

After Wednesday's victory over Toronto, the New York Mets are tied with the Braves for the final National League Wild Card spot. With a few regular season weeks left, there is a chance the red-hot Mets will clinch a postseason berth.

This would be massive news not only for the club but also for Pete Alonso. If New York can reach the playoffs and he performs well, it could go a long way toward helping him rebuild his free agency value.
