PICTURE: Tommy Edman’s heartwarming moment with mom Maureen after winning NLCS MVP
At the start of the season, Tommy Edman wouldn't have expected to be winning the NLCS MVP with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The trade acquisition from the St. Louis Cardinals managed a record-equalling 11 RBIs against the New York Mets in the postseason as the Dodgers won in six games.
After the game, Edman shared a special moment with his mother Maureen as he was named the Most Valuable Player. Maureen, who is of Korean descent, moved from South Korea to the United States as a child. She grew up in Los Angeles and as per her son, has been a Dodgers fan since her childhood. She married Tommy's father John, who is of European heritage.
Tommy Edman was hot on the plate on Sunday. He hit a two-run double in the first inning that drove in Shohei Ohtani from third base and Teoscar Hernandez from first. In his second at-bat, he struck his first-ever postseason homer, a two-run blast in the third, that also plated Hernandez again.
Overall in the six games played, Edman blanked out in the RBI column just once in game 5. He went 11-for-27 at the plate with an average of .407 with three doubles and a homer. His 11 RBIs tied him with Corey Seager who achieved it in the 2020 season.
Tommy Edman's father had a few heartwarming words for his son
Tommy's father, John, who was also present at Dodger Stadium for his son's momentous occasion, spoke highly of Tommy's character as a player. John himself played college baseball and is currently a baseball coach at the La Jolla Country Day School in San Diego.
“When he was a kid, playing baseball was just having fun,” John Edman said. “But he was a good player, he played really hard and he was a great teammate. But honestly, we were just having fun. He got better and better. He pushed himself every step of the way and was surrounded by good people every step of the way. And he always kept his love for the game.”
Edman would like to prove himself yet again, as the Dodgers take on the New York Yankees in the World Series. If he keeps himself hot, another MVP title awaits.
