Pirates' Andrew McCutchen shuts down critics amid team struggles

Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Andrew McCutchen is now in his 17th year in the big leagues. He made his debut in 2009 and is still going strong in 2025 as a key part of the team.

He has split his time between designated hitter and right field. While he has played well this year, Pittsburgh currently sits in last place in the National League Central.

Tons of criticism have come out surrounding the Pirates, including a take from broadcaster David Todd, who said McCutchen’s playing time shouldn’t be a focus and suggested he be moved. That hit a nerve with McCutchen — and he didn’t hold back in firing back..

"Well thank God you're not a GM. Didn't know the season only lasted through the month of April," McCutchen said.

McCutchen was quick to defend his squad after Todd suggested the season was already over. The veteran isn’t ready to jump ship, not when the team has yet to play 30 games.

There’s still a long season ahead, and Pittsburgh hasn’t dug itself too deep a hole. With several exciting pieces scattered throughout the roster, the Pirates just need to put it all together.

Heading into Tuesday, things weren’t looking good for the Pirates. They had just been swept by the Cleveland Guardians in a three-game weekend series.

However, they put that behind them and looked like a brand-new team. In one of their best games of the year, they topped the Los Angeles Angels. From offense to defense, everything was working for the Buccos.

After Bailey Falter's shaky start, the bullpen took over and shut the Halos down, keeping them off the board from the fifth inning onward. Offensively, Pittsburgh's bats came alive. The team tallied a season-high 18 hits and played error-free defense.

Six hitters had multiple hits on Tuesday, including Andrew McCutchen, Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds. They cruised to a 9–3 win, bringing a much-needed boost to the clubhouse.

Pittsburgh will look to finish the series strong before facing its toughest opponent yet: the LA Dodgers. After that, the Pirates take on the Chicago Cubs as they aim to gain ground in the division.
