“Put some respect on his name” - MLB fans react to the "Broccoli Guy’s" epic dance during the Rays vs Athletics game
Despite the desperate realities facing their team, Oakland Athletics fans remain one of MLB's most devout fanbases. On Thursday, one individual in attendance at Oakland Coliseum brought that passion to another level.
During the third inning of the Rays' game in Oakland on Thursday, the NBCS broadcast turned its attention to a fan in the outfield stands. The fan in question was vibing to the music, wearing a broccoli-covered shirt and clasping two large broccoli florets in each hand.
"World’s biggest broccoli enjoyer" - Jomboy Media
The game was rather uneventful, and finished with the A's winning over the Tampa Bay Rays. However, the largest takeaway for many fans seemed to be the eccentric broccoli-themed A's supporter. After the game, several fans took to social media to offer their take.
After some research, internet sleuths identified the man as Jim Stewart Allen, a 35-year-old schoolteacher from Washington State. Although Allen is known to be a fan of the Seattle Mariners, that did not stop him from coming out in full broccoli-themed attire in Oakland.
"I mean, that’s one way to get on TV lol" - offered a fan
"ICONIC" - claimed another
"He's so real for that" - came another voice of support
While Allen may not be a fan of the Oakland Athletics per se, his behavior is befitting of some A's fans. However, a plan has already been concocted to relocate the team to Sacramento next season, before actualizing the long-term objective of relocating to Las Vegas.
"I've meet him here in Washington state at Seahawks games he's a chill dude." - said a commenter.
"He's a class act!" - opined another.
"MY GOAT!" - was yet another supporting comment.
Despite the fact that the 2024 season is set to be the last of the Oakland A's existence, that has not stopped their dwindling but passionate fanbase from making their voices heard. Several demonstrations have been held both inside and outside the stadium decrying owner Josh Fisher's decision to relocate the club.
Time is numbered for eccentric visitors to Oakland Coliseum
Although Allen's use of broccoli might be novel, he is far from the first fan to resort to some zany tactics at the Oakland Coliseum. However, now that the deal has been done to move the team, large changes are afoot. Whether or not the A's will retain their unique set of spectator stereotypes remains to be seen.
