"Really hope no one pays that" - MLB fans stunned as Shohei Ohtani & Decoy gold bobblehead hits $18,000 mark hours after giveaway
Los Angeles Dodgers fans queued up in numbers for Shohei Ohtani's bobblehead night at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday. The Dodgers had announced 40,000 bobbleheads of Ohtani holding his dog Decoy for the game against the Baltimore Orioles.
Apart from the 40,000, the NL West leaders also announced the 2000 special gold edition of Shohei Ohtani & Decoy bobbleheads, creating a buzz among the Dodgers faithful.
However, as it turns out, several fans who were lucky enough to prize away the special edition bobbleheads have put them up for sale. ESPN journalist Alden Gonzalez shared the news of the bobbleheads going for as high as $18,000.
MLB fans reacted to Gonzalez's post on X, formerly Twitter, bashing the Dodgers fans for putting the memorabilia up for sale.
"Really hope no one actually pays that," wrote a fan.
Fans also pointed out the shipping charges despite the astronomical price.
"Lol 18 grand and no free shipping. The fucking greed hahahhaa," mocked a fan.
"The shipping charges! Definition of chutzpah!" wrote another fan.
"Couldn’t even do free shipping," another comment read.
The comments continued:
“Rare,” a fan mocked the exclusivity of the bobbleheads after they went up for sale.
Shohei Ohtani's dog, Decoy, steals the spotlight on Dodgers star's bobblehead day
Dodgers fans were in for an adorable treat when Shohei Ohtani's beloved dog Decoy took the mound for the ceremonial first pitch ahead of Wednesday's game. Decoy fetched the ball from the mound to Ohtani at home plate, ending the sequence with a high five.
Following the game, Ohtani reflected on the heartfelt moment.
"It's a really special night," Ohtani said through his interpreter. "I hope to buy some special snack for him."
Shohei Ohtani cashed in on the occasion, giving the Dodgers the lead with a solo home run, his 42nd of the season, from the leadoff spot. The two-time MVP also stole base in the fifth inning to take his tally up to 42 for the season.
The Dodgers superstar, after the team's 6-4 win, is on pace for becoming the first player to reach the 50-50 mark (50 home runs & 50 stolen bases). He will have another opportunity to add to that tally in the series decider against the Orioles on Thursday.
