Red Sox legend David Ortiz mocks Yankees after Juan Soto's "new chapter begins" with Mets
The biggest move of the 2025 offseason came earlier this month when Juan Soto signed a blockbuster 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets. The star outfielder, coming off an impressive season with the New York Yankees, had many speculating that he would re-sign with the Bronx.
With Juan Soto having left the Yankees, one former rival of the team took the opportunity to take a dig at the club. Longtime Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz commented about the Yankees on Soto’s post.
Juan Soto shared a clip from his press conference announcing his signing with the New York Mets with the caption:
“A new chapter begins ⚾💪”
In the comments of the post, David Ortiz wrote:
'The……. Yankees lose😂😂'
David Ortiz was a rival to the New York Yankees during his time with the Boston Red Sox from 2003 to 2016. The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is one of the most famous and intense in MLB history.
Ortiz had a stellar career with the Red Sox, winning three World Series championships. He was a 10-time All-Star, a seven-time Silver Slugger Award winner and a World Series MVP. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2022.
David Ortiz wanted Juan Soto to sign with the Boston Red Sox
David Ortiz was quite candid about his desire for Juan Soto to join the Boston Red Sox. On the Baseball Isn't Boring podcast, Ortiz said (via the NY Post):
“We wanted him in Boston. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out.”
Discussing Soto’s potential role with the Red Sox, Ortiz added:
“If he signs with this organization, which is an amazing organization, he can balance the clubhouse in a way that I did. He’s gonna have Coach Papi in his corner.”
After hitting free agency, Soto garnered interest from several teams, including the Boston Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets and the New York Yankees.
With the Yankees this past season, Soto had a .288 batting average, 41 homers, 109 RBIs, 129 walks and a .989 OPS in 157 games played.
