Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu assembles the ultimate Venezuelan MLB team featuring Jose Altuve at 2B, Ronald Acuna Jr. at CF, and more
Boston Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu was asked who he would have in his Venezuelan baseball dream team. His selections certainly didn't disappoint, including numerous household names that have played for many of MLB's biggest franchises.
In an Instagram post by Batboysbaseball, Abreu named his star-studded roster.
"Miguel Cabrera at 3rd base, Jose Altuve at 2nd, Omar Vizquel at shortstop. In the centre, I'd take [Ronald] Acuna Jr. and pitching would be Felix Hernandez. Carlos Gonzalez in right field, Gerardo Parra in left and Andres Galarraga at 1st base. Salvador Perez is my catcher."
Having produced many MLB legends, and with numerous players from Venezuela coming over to play in the major leagues every season, the country is a force to be reckoned with in international competition. Venezuela is currently ranked sixth in the world.
Wilyer Abreu has first multi-homer game as Red Sox win in Texas
Wilyer Abreu has been having a productive first season in the major leagues, both at the plate and in the field. The 25-year-old added to his good performances with two home runs in the same game against the Texas Rangers, as the Red Sox won 7-2 at Globe Life Field.
The two blasts came at hugely important times in the game. Abreu's first homer came in the fourth inning, tying the game at 2-2. He picked up where he left off in his next plate appearance in the top of the sixth to blow the game wide open with a three-run shot, giving the visitors a 6-2 lead. Post-game, Abreu said he dedicated his performance to his late grandmother, who passed away the day before.
In the 2024 season so far, Abreu is batting at a .269 average, hitting 12 home runs in the process and batting in 45 runs.
His side takes on the same opponents next, but this time at Fenway Park, in the final game of the series as the Red Sox set their sights on a potential sweep. With the race for wildcard spots intensifying by the day, every game is hugely important. Boston fans will hope their team can get the job done on Wednesday as a challenging trip to Baltimore awaits.
