San Diego Padres star Manny Machado spurred on by healthy rivalry with Cardinals' Nolan Arenado

San Diego Padres star Manny Machado has been ranked fifth on the "Top 100 Now" list of MLB Network, just one spot higher than his rival Nolan Arenado. However, when asked about his competition with Arenado, Manny was appreciative of the healthy rivalry with his fellow third baseman. Additionally, he also mentioned how constant comparisons help them improve their performance.

"You know, it's just a battle, it's great for the game. We push each other, you know, we try to compete on getting gold gloves. We love playing the game. I think it's two players that go out there and try to compete for their team every single year. And, you know, it brings the best out of us," said Machado.

Manny and Nolan were the early favorites to win the National League MVP last year. As the Padres raced for a wild-card spot in August and September, Machado's chances improved considerably.

Nevertheless, Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt defeated Manny Machado and teammate Nolan Arenado to win the National League MVP Award, one of baseball's highest awards.

San Diego Padres star Manny Machado may want to use the opt-out clause in his $300 million deal after this season to test free agency once more.

Apparently, Machado wanted to extend his 10-year, $300 million contract with Padres. According to a report by the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee, Padres came up with an offer of 10 years and $255 million after hearing the MLB All-Star's proposal. However, Manny was not satisfied with the team's deal.

"There’s a lot of money out there. The market has changed since I signed five years ago. It has changed enormously. Things change and evolve. And as a player about to exit, that’s pretty good to see," said Manny referring to the Padres' proposed deal.

If he elects for free agency next winter, Machado will have greater negotiating power. For now, Manny wants to concentrate on next season rather than contract discussions.
