Shohei Ohtani is "pretty incredible," but Francisco Lindor is easily the MVP, says Mets manager Carlos Mendoza
During a recent episode of the New York Mets' "Meet At The Apple" podcast, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised Francisco Lindor’s 2024 season, asserting that while Shohei Ohtani’s achievements are impressive, Lindor is the real MVP.
Mendoza talked about Lindor’s dedication and leadership, pointing out that the shortstop was a key part of the team’s success.
He highlighted his determination during key moments, such as the last two games of the season during their doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves, where they clinched their postseason spot with a home run from the Puerto Rican.
In the same conversation, Mendoza acknowledged Ohtani’s historic season, calling it "pretty incredible." However, he emphasized the deeper qualities that make Lindor invaluable for the Mets.
According to Mendoza, the MVP award should reflect not just individual statistics, but also the impact on the team's success.
"Easy to say, MVP. I know Ohtani, what he does is pretty incredible, but when we talk about Most Valuable Player: Francisco Lindor," the manager said.
Lindor delivered one of the best seasons of his career, posting a .273 batting average, 33 home runs, 29 stolen bases, and a 7.0 WAR. His efforts, both offensively and defensively, helped the Mets to a postseason berth.
Shohei Ohtani is the clear favorite for NL MVP
Both Shohei Ohtani and Francisco Lindor had remarkable seasons in 2024. However, Ohtani’s record-setting accomplishments have made him the clear favorite for MVP.
His 2024 season was all about his dominance at the plate. Despite not pitching due to injury, he put up historic offensive numbers: batting .310, with 54 home runs, 130 RBI, and 59 stolen bases, becoming the first player in Major League Baseball to join the 50-50 club (at least 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in one season).
His ability to change games with both speed and power, along with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ star-studded lineup, have become a centerpiece for the team’s success.
Ohtani’s offensive dominance in 2024 puts him ahead of Lindor in the race for NL MVP, with many analysts believing he should be unanimous.
