"Should be banned from the stadium for life" - Yankees fans fume as Dodgers supporter's interference costs Gleyber Torres' homer during WS opener
New York Yankees fans were livid after a potential home run was denied to Gleyber Torres in the ninth inning of Game 1. Michael Kopech, who was pitching the ninth inning for the LA Dodgers, retired the first two hitters before taking on Torres at the plate in a 2-2 game.
The 2-1 pitch was sent to deep left-center field, where Teoscar Hernandez was stationed. The ball was caught by a Dodgers fan seated there. As soon as he caught it, the umpires called it fan interference since they thought it was going to hit the top of the wall instead of sailing into the stands.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone asked for review of the play. However, the call was upheld, as Torres had to settle for a double instead of a possible home run.
This led Yankees fans to express their outrage on Twitter.
"They should give him the HR since it was a Dodgers fan," one fan wrote.
"Nice catch. Now you’re banned for life," one fan posted.
"Should be banned from the stadium for life," another commented.
"Fan saved the day. The ball was gonna bounce hot off the wall and go back past the outfielder leading to a triple. What if…." one fan speculated.
"Should have been a home run" another added.
However, some felt the umpires made the right call there.
"It was the right call for sure," one fan posted.
"That would be a double either way," another wrote.
Yankees lose it in the end despite adding a run in extra innings
The game went into extra innings as the game was tied 2-2 after nine innings. In the 10th inning, exceptional base running from Jazz Chisholm Jr. saw the infielder steal back-to-back bases before reaching home on a groundout from Anthony Volpe. This gave the Yankees an important 3-2 lead.
However, in the bottom of the 10th inning, with the based loaded, a pitch from Nestor Cortes resulted in a walk-off grand slam by Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, giving the Dodgers a 6-3 win in extra innings.
With this, the Dodgers take a win in Game 1, and now the two teams will collide in Game 2 of the series on Saturday.
