“Showing a lot more confidence" - Orioles skipper opens up on Jackson Holliday’s second homer of 2024 season in 9-5 victory against Guardians
After going 2-1 in their series, the Baltimore Orioles started their final game on Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field. They tied the series with a 9-5 win against the Guardians.
Orioles rookie Jackson Holliday recorded his second homer of the 2024 season during the game. In the fourth inning, Holliday hit a 362-foot homer that brought in a run, giving them a 4-2 lead.
Jackson Holliday recorded two hits in four at-bats with one RBI, one walk, and one strikeout. Discussing his performance after the game, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said:
“Showing a lot more confidence. The way he can stay on the baseball is much improved. He’s got a ton of abilities. He’s going to have some ups and downs. He’s a really, really young player. But it’s great to see him swing the bat this way this series.”
The Orioles took the lead in the first inning on Ryan O'Hearn’s double. Adley Rutschman’s sac fly and Eloy Jiménez’s single extended the lead to 3-0 in the third inning. After Jackson Holliday’s homer in the fourth, Gunnar Henderson hit another homer, taking the lead to 6-2.
In the sixth inning, Ryan Mountcastle hit an RBI single, followed by Adley Rutschman’s RBI double, bringing in two runs for the Orioles. Rutschman’s solo RBI single set the final score of the game in the eighth inning.
"I thought we just took some really good at-bats against them… Good day for us offensively,” said Brandon Hyde on the team’s performance.
Jackson Holliday opens up about his recent upward performance
Jackson Holliday was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk Tides after going 2-for-34 in 10 games with the Orioles earlier this season. Since being recalled up to the majors on July 31, he has performed better, going 5-for-14 with six RBIs before Sunday’s game.
"I'm starting to see the ball a little deeper and allowing myself to go the other way, which allows me to see the ball for a longer time. Honestly, a whole lot more comfortable. Just trusting myself and my approach and just trying to have fun," Jackson Holliday said (via MLB.com).
The Baltimore Orioles are tied at the top of the AL East with the New York Yankees with an impressive 67-46 record. They will start a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.
