"Sports media is a joke";"That's not how it works" - Fans lash out at MLB insider's Juan Soto-inspired claims on Yankees bringing back Gerrit Cole
The New York Yankees are currently at a crossroads. Having imploded in Game 5 of the World Series that gave the title to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team is now faced with important decisions, particularly the contract of Juan Soto.
Soto is represented by super agent Scott Boras. The agent slash business magnate represents some of the biggest names in baseball, including Bryce Harper, Cody Bellinger and Soto's Yankees teammate Gerrit Cole.
Recently, Cole re-signed with the Bronx Bombers for a four-year, $144 million contract. The move seemed to have stemmed from the team wanting to lure Soto back in Yankee pinstripes. At least this is what MLB insider Ken Rosenthal suggested.
The MLB insider is now under fire after suggesting that the Bombers re-signed Cole to appease super agent Boras and increase their chances of re-signing Juan Soto.
"They're not going to offend [Scott] Boras." The Yankees need to handle Gerrit Cole's situation carefully so it doesn't negatively affect their chances with Juan Soto, according to @Ken_Rosenthal." - Foul Territory
Rosenthal's comments drew the ire of fans, especially on social media website Reddit. Fans talked down on Rosenthal, implying that the insider is out of touch.
"This really doesn’t make any sense. If anything boras would be less inclined to deal with the Yankees after they refused to give an extra year and $36 million to one of his clients. (Though this means the Yankees will have more money to throw at Soto now)" one user said.
Some Redditors even suggested that Rosenthal used to be believable but has lost credibility as the years went by.
"Rosenthal lost the plot years ago tbh," a Redditor claimed.
"Time for Ken to hang’em up," another added.
"I feel like Rosenthal is doing that thing where people talk for the sake of talking when it would have been better to keep his mouth shut because this makes zero sense," a fan exclaimed.
While others peppered Rosenthal's rhetoric, some tried to make sense out of the situation.
"Or they brought him back because he’s a year out from being a Cy Young and the rotation is full of question marks without him. Just a thought," a fan stated.
Whatever the case may be, the Yankees will have an uphill battle heading into 2025 after being the perpetrators of one of the most embarrassing meltdowns in World Series history.
Yankees trade World Series ring-getter to the Astros
The New York Yankees recently made a move in the offseason, but it's not what the fanbase has been hoping for. The Bombers sent former top prospect Taylor Trammell to the Houston Astros for cash considerations.
In what seems to be a budget-clearing move, New York sent Trammell to Houston after just one year with the team's system. The 27-year-old played for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since May after playing just five MLB games for the Yanks.
On an interesting side note, Trammell is the only active player to get a ring regardless of the 2024 World Series outcome as he started the season off with the Los Angeles Dodgers but was assigned just two weeks later and was claimed by the New York Yankees off waivers.
