St. Louis Cardinals fans ecstatic as heralded rookie Jordan Walker hits first career home run: "Walker? More like Homer!"
St. Louis Cardinals heralded rookie outfielder Jordan Walker hit his first major league home run on Wednesday, launching an 383-foot blast over the left field wall at Busch Stadium.
Walker – the No. 4-ranked prospect in all of MLB coming into this season – gave Redbird Nation something to cheer about in the midst of a 5-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves with his inaugural round-tripper. The 20-year-old slugger mashed an offering off of Braves reliever Michael Tonkin at 104.2 mph for the Cardinals' first run of the day.
Jordan Walker, an imposing power-hitting prospect, comes with the promise of adding many more homers to the already juiced heart of the St. Louis Cardinals lineup. He hit 33 home runs in 201 minor league games over the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Cardinals fans are expecting big things – and big blasts – from the team's first-round draft selection in 2020.
In spite of Walker's blast making the score 5-1 in favor of visiting Atlanta, Cardinals fans gave the rookie a long, rousing ovation that didn't stop once he reached the dugout. St. Louis veteran pitcher Adam Wainwright escorted Walker back up the dugout steps so he could take a curtain call in one of the few bright spots of a dreary afternoon at Busch Stadium.
The 5-2 loss dropped the St. Louis Cardinals to 2-4 – a disappointing record considering the team is the presumptive favorite to win the National League Central Division this season.
While Jordan Walker and his teammates have mostly been providing enough firepower for the Cardinals to be more than a two-win team, the St. Louis pitching staff has not allowed the team to keep up with the offensive displays of the opposition.
Jordan Walker's homer allowed for a new entry into the MLB "dad joke" Hall of Fame, as evidenced by the number of Cardinals fans making the connection between walking and homering.
Walker seems to be filling the snicker void created after pitcher Homer Bailey retired following the 2020 season.
Jordan Walker fitting in well with St. Louis Cardinals
Walker is settling in well over the first week of his big league career. In six games with the Cardinals, he is hitting .333 with eight hits and five RBIs. He had one run on his first homer Wednesday afternoon.
