"Steve Cohen is able to get a guy in his prime" - Juan Soto's blockbuster $765M deal with Mets draws interesting reaction from Brandon Nimmo
Juan Soto inked a 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets. It is the single-largest contract in the history of professional sports. They outbid Soto's former team, the New York Yankees, en route to locking down the potential future Hall of Famer for the next decade and a half.
That is not a reality Brandon Nimmo, another Mets outfielder, ever expected to see. When he was drafted in 2011, he recalled the team shedding big contracts to cut payroll.
Now, they're outspending the mighty Yankees. Via the New York Post, Nimmo said:
“It’s amazing how [Cohen] has changed things for Mets fans, Mets players and this organization. It’s just a pivotal moment in his ownership and the history of the Mets franchise that he’s able to get a player away from the Yankees and a guy in his prime."
He continued:
“Even when I was growing up, the Yankees always got the best players, they always bought the best players. It was just a common-known fact, and now you see something here where the Mets were able to bring [Soto] over. It’s a change to the way things have always been. I definitely think it is sweet to have done it this way.”
Nimmo will play center field to Soto's right field for the majority of their time together, so he will be close with the new Met.
Brandon Nimmo can't believe the Mets got Juan Soto
Until the signing was revealed, Brandon Nimmo couldn't believe the Mets were going to get Juan Soto. He knew they were going to pursue him, as did most in the baseball world, but he didn't know they were actually going to land the player.
He said via the New York Post:
“I knew that David and Steve were doing whatever they could to bring him here. When the news finally broke, just extreme jubilation. I sent text messages to [Stearns and Cohen] and said, ‘I can’t thank you enough for bringing him here.’”
Nimmo signed a long-term contract with the Mets, too, so he's likely to be Soto's teammate for six more seasons.
