"Steve Cohen was taking dead aim at the Yankees" - MLB sportscaster makes feelings known after Juan Soto signs with Mets for $765,000,000
Mets owner Steve Cohen has got the biggest fish of them all, Dominican star Juan Soto, who aggred to the biggest contract in US sports history. The deal stands at a whopping $765 million over 15 years, which takes him well past the $700 million contract signed by Shohei Ohtani with the Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason.
Many ballclubs were ready to splurge big for the 26-year-old lefty slugger, but Cohen beat the competition for Soto's signature. Having failed to sign any notable new faces to rebuild the roster in the past two seasons, Soto's signing sets the tone for Cohen and the Mets.
MLB sporstcaster Howie Rose shared his thoughts about the sensational Juan Soto deal to the Mets, on X:
"This is perhaps the most unique moment in the history of the New York Mets. I told you from day one that Steve Cohen was not about to be the little brother in town. He was taking dead aim at the Yankees and everyone else. It’s on."
Last offseason, Steve Cohen had attempted to sign two Japanese aces, Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but both swiped the Mets to sign with the Dodgers.
However, this offseason, Cohen had other plans as despite stiff competetion from the Yankees, Red Sox and the Blue Jays. He locked a deal with Soto for 15 years, and the ballclub will look to restructure around him and start contesting for the NL pennant more consistently in the coming MLB seasons.
Juan Soto was coming off a blockbuster 2024 season
Juan Soto was traded to the Yankees in a seven-player trade deal with the Padres during the 2023 offseason. The deal saw Soto and Trent Grisham sign with Yankees in return of four pitchers and a catcher signing with the Padres.
Soto teammed up with Aaron Judge as the duo carried the Yankees on their shoulder to a first World Series appearance in more than a decade. Despite their loss to the Dodgers in five games, Soto left an indelible mark on the Yankee faithful with an outstanding offensive season.
Now, his long term deal with the Mets will draw interesting reactions from both sets of fans especially during the fiesty Subway Series in the future MLB seasons.
