Steve Cohen opens up on Carlos Correa offseason drama, confirms it was his decision to back away from the deal
New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has shed some light on the Carlos Correa saga that captivated baseball fans during the offseason. The will-they-won’t-they storyline was the talk of the baseball world during the month of January. In the end, it was Cohen who made the final call.
Carlos Correa seemed destined to start the MLB season in the blue and orange of the Mets. The two parties had agreed to a massive 12-year, $315 million deal. The Mets, however, had concerns about Correa due to his physical.
For a man who has taken a lot of risks in his life, this was one that Steve Cohen was not willing to move ahead with.
Cohen recently discussed the delicate situation between the two sides and his decision against signing Correa.
"I have a good relationship with Scott (Boras)...We did our best to try and figure out a way to make it work, and I just personally came to the conclusion that I couldn't make it work...I decided that this was a risk I didn't feel like taking."
The Mets were one of the most active teams during the offseason and added several pieces to an already talented lineup. Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga and Tommy Pham were just a few of the club's big-name acquisitions.
Carlos Correa eventually signed for the Minnesota Twins
Carlos Correa was linked to several clubs during the offseason. There is no doubting his talent on the baseball field. Correa is a two-time All-Star, a Platinum Glove winner and a former Rookie of the Year. He was also a member of the Houston Astros team that won the 2017 World Series.
The drama surrounding Correa's contract during the offseason was chaotic. The two-time All-Star agreed a deal with the San Francisco Giants, which fell through. A deal was announced with the Mets but Cohen was unwilling to move ahead.
Correa eventually signed for the Minnesota Twins on a six-year, $200 million deal.
Despite losing out on one of MLB's premier shortstops, the Mets remain one of the favorites to win it all in 2023. For Steve Cohen, winning a World Series is the only goal. Nothing short of that will suffice.
