Steven Kwan reacts to David Fry’s incredible walk-off home run in Guardians victory
The Cleveland Guardians came back dramatically as they won Game 3 of the ALCS against the New York Yankees in extra innings, 7-5. Heading into the ninth inning, the Guardians were down by two runs. They tied the game in the bottom ninth before David Fry's walk-off home run in the tenth.
After the game, Cleveland All-Star Steven Kwan sounded off on Instagram. Of all the words to describe the momentous occasion, Kwan summed up his teammates' heroics in two words.
"Fry day" - Steven Kwan captioned his story on Instagram.
David Fry's two-run walk-off home run to left center on Thursday lifted the Guardians past the New York Yankees. The Yankees drew first blood through a Jose Trevino RBI single in the second inning. Cleveland clutched back the game in the third through Kyle Manzardo's two-run shot.
Andres Gimenez added another run to Cleveland's lead in the bottom of the sixth. However, the visiting Yankees came alive in the eighth as Aaron Judge blasted a two-run home run that tied the game. It was followed by Giancarlo Stanton's homer in the same inning as the sluggers went back-to-back to give the Yankees the lead.
With the Yankees leading 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Jhonkensy Noel smashed a towering home run to left field to tie the ball game. In extras, David Fry put the game away for the hosts with his two-run shot.
Cleveland Guardians' World Series drought
The Cleveland Guardians, then known as the Indians, won the American League pennant for the last time in 2016 led by one of the all-time great managers Terry Francona. Second-seed Cleveland made quick work of Boston in the ALDS sweeping them, 3-0. They then defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS, 4-1.
The Guardians would then advance to the World Series against the Chicago Cubs in a battle of sports franchise curses. The Cubs got the better of the Indians and broke their 108-year World Series drought.
At the time of writing, Cleveland owns the longest World Series drought having last won it in 1948. Guardians fans will hope Thursday's win can turnaround things for the AL Central winners and propel them through to the World Series, potentially against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers hold a 3-1 lead in the NLCS over the New York Mets.
