"They hit me in the head" - Blake Snell jumps in surprise as teammates almost knock him over celebrating massive career first
Reigning NL Cy Young Winner Blake Snell achieved a career-first during the San Francisco Giants' clash against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. Snell registered his first career no-hitter during his first complete game.
He became the 18th Giants pitcher to achieve the feat and the first since 2015. During the post-game celebrations, the veteran pitcher was almost knocked out by his overenthusiastic teammates.
During a postgame interview with NBCS, Snell's teammates, Logan Webb and Kyle Harrison, emptied the water cooler on the Giants ace. Snell reacted immediately, calling out his teammates for almost knocking him out.
"It's cold. I gotta collect my breath. Get a replay of that. That's not how you do it. They hit me in the head with the dang lid," Snell said as reporters burst into laughter.
Blake Snell had a complete game on the night, going past eight innings for the first time in his MLB career. He has been on fire since his second injury concern after joining the Giants in the offseason on a $62 million, two-year deal.
Blake Snell shuts down naysayers after career-first no-hitter
Despite being a two-time Cy Young winner, Blake Snell has always had critics especially targetting his inability to pitch for long durations.
However, Snell shut the naysayers after going nine innings and throwing 114 pitches to strike out 11 hitters during his record-setting performance.
"They can't say it anymore. You know? Complete game, shutout, no-hitter. Leave me alone. 'He doesn't go into the 9th. He doesn't go into the 8th.' Just did it. Leave me alone."
Blake Snell's future with the club was up in the air after it was reported that the Giants were open to trading the two-time Cy Young winner ahead of the trade deadline last month.
However, despite reported interest from several big market teams, including the New York Yankees, Snell is staying put in San Francisco. With performances like these, he's only going to shut more critics.
