“Those leaders up at the top they bleed down into us” - Brandon Marsh recalls Phillies debut, credits Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber for leadership
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh opened up about being traded to his childhood hero, Bryce Harper. Marsh began his Major League career with the Los Angeles Angels but was traded after two seasons.
Marsh was sent to Philadelphia Phillies in 2022, where he got the chance to play alongside the player he had always looked up to. In an episode of Chris Rose Sports podcast, he discussed a memorable moment with Harper and Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber.
“I remember him and (Kyle) Schwarber coming up to me the day I got there. I don’t know much about Philadelphia, grew up in Atlanta,” Brandon Marsh said (0:09).
“Harper and Schwarber just kind of put their arm around me the second I got in that locker room, and were like ‘Hey kid, I know we don’t know much about each other, but we’re in a tight pennant race here. So, you just gotta get in or get out.’ In like an encouraging way, you know?”
Brandon Marsh, like his idol Bryce Harper, throws with his right hand and bats left-handed. Reflecting on the team and gesture from the Phillies' top players, Marsh added (1:46):
“This team is just special. Those guys, those leaders up at the top they bleed down into us into the daycare.”
Brandon Marsh discusses the impact Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber had on him
Brandon Marsh has been hitting .261 with a .752 OPS during the 2024 season, along with seven home runs and 32 RBIs. Talking about the impact Harper and Schwarber had on him through their interaction, he said (0:40):
“It’s like, ‘we’re gonna be here every step of the way, we’re gonna be here for you, if you need anything, you come to us and let us know. But we’re gonna need you if we’re gonna get to what we wanna get to.’”
“Just hearing stuff like that from those guys, it hit deeper, and I was like, ‘Ok. They got my back, it’s time to ride out there with them.’”
The Phillies were dealt a blow when Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber were placed on the Injured List on June 28 due to injuries. However, they aren't severe, and both players are expected to return soon.
