WATCH: Anthony Rizzo receives touching tribute from Cubs with his iconic walk-up music
Anthony Rizzo spent more time in a Chicago Cubs uniform than with any other MLB team in his career. On Friday, Rizzo returned to Wrigley Field for the first time after his trade to the New York Yankees in 2021.
The first baseman was eagerly awaiting the moment to return to his former stomping ground. While some fans are known to boo players who previously played for their team, Rizzo received an emotional and warm welcome.
The Cubs honoured Rizzo with a nice gesture by playing his iconic walk-up music, and the fans gave a massive round of applause and a standing ovation.
It was a nostalgic experience for Rizzo to hear his old walk-up song "Intoxicated" by Martin Solveig and GTA at Wrigley Field.
Rizzo had accomplished most of his achievements with the Cubs. The slugger had won four Golden Glove Awards and played for the NL All-Star team thrice.
Rizzo smashed 242 home runs and 784 RBIs with a .272 batting clip. Most of all, Rizzo helped his team win their first World Series title in 2016.
Anthony Rizzo reflects on his return to Wrigley Field
It was a great day for Anthony Rizzo and the Yankees as they defeated the Cubs 3-0. It was a much-needed comeback for the team after their loss to the Rangers.
Rizzo opened up on his return and was pleased to have an unforgettable experience.
“The whole day I was smiling,” Rizzo said (h/t Associated Press). “There would be times where I was just on the field just smiling, taking it in. I haven’t been here in a while, so it’s nice to be back.”
It's indeed a special moment and a weekend to look forward to for Anthony Rizzo. The Yankees now hold the same record as the Orioles in the AL East (81-60).
