WATCH: Astros OF Mauricio Dubon slams into wall after making spectacular catch
Mauricio Dubon pulled off one of the best defensive plays of the week when the Houston Astros faced the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Sunday.
The Astros outfielder sprinted nearly 30 yards to his right to grab a high flyball just a few feet in front of the fence before slaming into the cornerwall in leftfield.
The Astros carried a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning when Ramon Urias stepped into the batter's box for the home team to face reliever Hector Neris.
On a 2-2 count, Neris threw a splitter right over the middle of the plate, and the right-handed Urias put a good swing on the pitch to pull the ball high towards the leftfield fence. Dubon was standing quite central for his position at leftfield and therefore had to make a lengthy run to get close to the ball.
Eventually, Mauricio Dubon sprinted more than 30 yards to his right to make an outstanding running catch on the warning track before slamming his body against the leftfield cornerwall. The momentum of his run generated a fierce impact, and Dubon was rolling on the ground from the impact of the crash.
Mauricio Dubon avoids serious injury after his stunning ctach
Houston Astros leftfielder Mauricio Dubon successfully made the catch to end the inning for the Baltimore Orioles, although he was taken out of the game in the immediately. According to reports, the 30-year-old has not suffered any serious injury and will be considered for selection on a day-to-day basis.
“The doctor came and see him. He’s fine, but he’s just going to be sore just because of how hard he ran into that wall,” Astros manager Joe Espada said after the game.
Mauricio Dubon spent three years with the San Francisco Giants before getting traded to the Houston Astros in 2022. He enjoyed a solid campaign last year to establish himself as a feature in the Astros lineup besides picking up a Gold Glove.
However, Dubon has slashed .248/.278/.354 this season with just four home runs, 37 RBIs, and an OPS+ of 79. Nevertheless, he remains an integral part of the team for his stellar defense.
The Astros won the game 6-3 and split the series after losing the previous two games to the Orioles. They will head to Philadelphia next for a four-game series with the Phillies.
