Watch: Jurickson Profar's epic home run robbery fools Mookie Betts and Dodgers fansĀ
Eternal divisional rivals the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers clashed for Game 2 of the NLDS on Sunday. While the Padres took an early lead for a second consecutive game in the series, Jurickson Profar stole the spotlight with his remarkable defensive play.
As the Dodgers trailed 1-0 in the game, former MVP Mookie Betts smoked Yu Darvish for what seemed like a home run. However, Profar lept over the left field fence for an elusive home run robbery.
The Padres outfielder didn't celebrate initially, not only fooling the Dodgers fans but also Betts in believing it was a home run. The Dodgers All-Star was in his celebratory stride while rounding the bases before realizing Profar had caught the ball.
"Jurickson Profar went into the crowd to rob Mookie Betts of a home run and spent so long celebrating it that Betts was halfway to third base before everyone realized he caught it."
The Padres took an early lead in the game much like the Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday. All-Star slugger Fernando Tatis Jr. got hold of Jack Flaherty for a solo home run in the top of the first.
Padres hope to avoid NLDS opener mistakes in Game 2
Profar's robbery ensured the Padres came out of the first inning with a 1-0 lead. The visitors added another two runs in the second inning after designated hitter David Peralta went deep for a two-run home run.
The Padres are hoping to avoid repeating the same mistakes from the NLDS opener when they surrendered their lead twice to hand the initiative to the home team.
The hosts got one back after Gavin Lux's sacrifice fly scored Teoscar Hernandez in the bottom of the second inning. However, at the time of writing the Padres have done well to restrict the star studded offense to just one run, maintaining a 3-1 lead after five innings.
