WATCH: NFL star Patrick Mahomes gets fired up in Royals gear after Kansas' tying run against his idol Derek Jeter's Yankees
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was at Kauffman Stadium to support the Kansas City Royals for their ALDS Game 3 against the New York Yankees. Mahomes who played college baseball for Texas Tech was decked out in Royals gear as he watched the game enthusiastically from the suites.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Royals tied the game 2-2 after RBIs from Michael Massey and Kyle Isbel. This had Mahomes rejoicing the tying run enthusiastically, rubbing it in the face of former Chiefs teammate Gehrig Dieter who was in Yankees gear.
Although Mahomes idolized former Yankees captain Derek Jeter growing up, his allegiance with the Kansas City Chiefs took precedence at the game. He is also a stakeholder in the Royals' ownership group after he reportedly bought a 1% stake in the team following his first Super Bowl win in 2020.
However, the Royals lost the game as Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton struck a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth inning off Kris Bubic to help the Yankees take the game 3-2 and a 2-1 lead in the ALDS.
Mahomes, who is on a bye week, would be disappointed but he'll likely be there for the next game at Kauffman Stadium, hopeful of Kansas City tying the series and forcing Game 5.
Patrick Mahomes wants to host his idol Derek Jeter
The Royals-Yankees ALDS clash has brewed an off-field rivalry between two big names. Patrick Mahomes, who once said Derek Jeter was his idol, is hoping to host the five-time World Series champion for Game 4 between the Yankees and the Royals.
Jeter, who spent his entire major league career with the Yankees, is rooting for them to win it all and end the World Series drought since 2009. Meanwhile, Mahomes' Royals will try their best to extend that drought by eliminating them in the ALDS.
Speaking to the reporters at a press conference, Mahomes was asked if he'll help Jeter get some tickets to watch the game at K. The three-time Super Bowl champion replied:
“Yeah, man, I’ll let him be there because when we hopefully win, I’ll get to talk trash. I know he’s a big Yankees fan. I think if the Yankees lost this series, he might have to move cities. So let’s see if we can do that for him.”
Maybe we will get to see an exchange between the two if they end up in a suite at Kauffman Stadium for Game 4.
