Watch: Pete Alonso’s epic home run announcement by Mets broadcaster Howie Rose goes viral
New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso blasted a three-run home run in the ninth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers to help his team into the NLDS on Thursday night.
In what was a tight affair after both teams won a game each to tie their Wild Card series, the Mets staged an epic comeback in the ninth inning to continue their postseason run in the MLB.
The long-awaited spark that fueled New York's comeback was Alonso's clutch hit in the bottom of the ninth, sending radio announcer Howie Rose wild, which went viral on social media.
Here's the video:
Pete Alonso was selected by the New York Mets in the 2016 MLB Draft and went on to make his major league debut with them in 2019.
In his first season in the MLB, he won the NL Rookie of the Year and finished as the MLB home run leader. Since then, he has been a central figure in the Mets lineup and widely considered one of the best sluggers in the game.
Despite his solid record in the MLB, Alonso was not at his best throughout the series against the Brewers. Before his game-winning home run, the first baseman was 1-for-11 in the series, with some clumsy base running in Game 2 of the series.
However, with his team trailing 2-0 on the night, he stepped up and smashed the ball deep into right field to send the Mets into the NLDS, where they will face the Philadelphia Phillies. It was a closely contested series that saw both teams put in some exceptional performances and trade blows back and forth.
Pete Alonso makes Mets history with clutch home run vs Brewers
With his game-winning hit against the Milwaukee Brewers, Pete Alonso became the first New York Mets player to hit a go-ahead home run in the ninth inning or later of a postseason game. Amidst the celebrations after the game, Alonso gave a quick interview where he expressed his happiness with the result:
"I'm so happy I could come through. Just pure excitement, I'm so happy I could come through for the team right there. I'm so excited."
The Mets face the Philadelphia Phillies in a five-game series in NLDS, which begin son Saturday. Over the regular season, the Mets finished six games behind the Phillies in the division but will be eager to get the better of their opponents in the postseason.
