WATCH: Rangers fan makes improbable catch attempt off netting, gets ejected and returns after appeal
During the eighth inning of a game between the Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres, Jurickson Profar fouled a ball over to the third base side in the air. The ball came just over the netting enough for a fan to make an impressive catch attempt. The netting actually helped him, as it kept him from tumbling straight into the dugout.
His drink went flying, but he was catapulted back up onto the top of the dugout. Unfortunately, the ball had bounced off his hand and over into the stands. Someone else caught it, but all eyes were on him for his standout effort.
Unfortunately, security was among those watching, and they escorted him out of the stadium for climbing on the dugout and messing with the protective netting. He jogged out to some boos.
However, unseen by the camera, the fan must have done a good job appealing his case. Shortly after, he was jogging back to his seat to enjoy the end of the match.
Rangers can't keep hot start up in loss
The Texas Rangers are the defending World Series champions, something a casual fan might never guess if they were only told their 2024 record. The game on Wednesday night pushed them to 39-47.
They're eight games under .500 and seven games out of the division lead. It's beginning to get late early, and losses like Wednesday night's game are a big reason why.
The Rangers got hot early, scoring four unanswered runs to take a 4-2 lead going into the fifth. They allowed the San Diego Padres to chip away, scoring one in the fifth and one in the sixth to allow them to tie it up.
In the seventh, San Diego took the lead by scoring two runs and didn't look back. Those four runs would be all Texas could muster, as they were shut down the rest of the way.
Nathaniel Lowe was the only player with multiple hits, and the bullpen, aside from Kirby Yates, was not particularly stout. Neither was Jon Gray, Texas' starter. They will try to rebound today (July 4) and prevent a series loss.
