WATCH: Tigers’ Trey Sweeney pulls off impressive diving catch despite intense collision with Riley Greene

After coming off a 7-1 loss against the Baltimore Orioles, Trey Sweeney and the Detroit Tigers began the second game of their three-game series. The Saturday night game saw the Tigers take a 2-1 lead in the first inning.

However, the Orioles tied the scores in the sixth inning. The Tigers then extended their lead by two runs, but Baltimore again tied the game in the ninth. In the ninth inning, the Orioles had runners on second and third, hoping to score on Anthony Santander's pop fly.

Santander’s hit registered an exit velocity of 66 mph and was caught by shortstop Trey Sweeney, keeping the score tied. Here's the clip of the impressive catch:

Sweeney ran toward the ball, not noticing outfielder Riley Greene, who was also rushing toward it. Greene saw him and dove for the catch.

After catching the ball, Sweeney tumbled over Greene and had difficulty breathing after the collision but maintained his grip on the ball, leading to the out. The game resumed after an injury delay.


Trey Sweeney expresses confidence in team after victory over the Orioles

The Detroit Tigers took a two-run lead in the second inning with Dillon Dingler’s triple. In the eighth inning, Jake Rogers hit a single, followed by Colt Keith’s sacrifice fly, extending the Tigers' lead to 4-2.

However, Baltimore Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run double in the ninth inning, tying the scores and leading to an extra innings. In the final inning, Riley Greene hit a single, followed by Zach McKinstry’s sacrifice fly, giving the Tigers a 6-4 victory over the Orioles.

Discussing the win, Tigers shortstop Trey Sweeney said (via AP News):

“We’ve been battling for a long time now. I think everybody’s just confident in our lineup, in our staff and defense. Everybody’s confident in each other, and that’s what makes a good team.”

With the victory, the Detroit Tigers have won 10 of their last 13 games. The Tigers (81-74), with a .523 winning percentage, are 0.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins for a wild card spot.

They face the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday in the finale of their three-game series.
