“We’ll gladly ruin that Subway Series idea” - Evan Phillips confident on Dodgers triumph over Mets as World Series aspirations grow stronger
Los Angeles Dodgers closer Evan Phillips says the team will be happy to spoil the idea of a World Series solely in New York. Meanwhile, manager Dave Roberts also disclosed his desire to beat the two New York teams en route to claiming the Fall Classic.
At the moment, there is plenty of discussion around the Big Apple regarding the possibility of a 'Subway Series,' with the two New York teams being just four wins away from reaching the World Series.
The Dodgers will take on the New York Mets in the Championship Series for the National League pennant. On the other hand, the New York Yankees start as the favorite against the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Championship Series.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today spoke with the Dodgers ahead of the opening game of the NLCS.
“We’ll gladly ruin that Subway Series idea,’’ relief pitcher Evan Phillips said.
Dodgers outfielder Kevin Kiermaier echoed his teammate's sentiments:
“We know everyone in New York would love that Subway Series, but sorry, we’re going to do everything in our power to make them fly cross-country to come watch us."
Subway Series is the term used for any MLB series played between the Mets and the Yankees, including interleague play. It had previously included the Giants and the Dodgers as well, before they moved their franchises to the West Coast.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts wants a showdown with Yankees
Dave Roberts also stated his desire to beat both the New York teams on their way to the World Series crown. Roberts wants to go past the New York Mets in the NLCS before beating the New York Yankees in the Fall Classic.
Roberts spoke with Bob Nightengale before the start of the NLCS.
“I want to take on both New York teams,’’ Roberts said. “That’d be perfect, right?’’
The two franchises have faced each other three times in the postseason, and their last meeting was during the 2015 NL Division Series. The Mets got the better of the Dodgers on that occasion before losing the World Series to the Kansas City Royals. Incidentally, no teams from New York and Los Angeles have squared up against each other during the playoffs since then.
