“We’re gonna add some outside pieces that will benefit us” - Brian Cashman hints at possible trade options ahead of the deadline

General Manager Brian Cashman joined the New York Yankees before their series-opening game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. The club started the Tuesday night game after losing a series 2-1 to the Boston Red Sox.

The Bronx Bombers are in a slump after losing 16 of their last 22 games, which is why Cashman has joined the team. Discussing the same in a pregame interview, he said:

"Because of how we've been playing, I've decided to join us… It's been a struggle, obviously. Thankfully we got out of the gates really strong, so hopefully that cushion will allow us to work through this hopefully sooner than later on because it's gone on long enough."

Despite the Yankees struggling, they are ranked second in the AL East with 55 wins and 37 losses, thanks to their good start to the 2024 season. Brian Cashman will remain in Tampa, Florida, to work at the team's facility.

He will prepare for the player draft next week and work on potential trades before the end-of-month deadline. Reflecting on the situation, Cashman said (0:56):

"We're going to be open-minded to a lot of different things. I'm not going to point out anything specific but we definitely have areas to improve upon and we'll do our best. We just got to figure our way through this ourselves and hopefully we gonna add some outside pieces that will benefit us at some point."

Brian Cashman addresses the New York Yankees' struggles hoping for a turnaround against the Rays

The struggling New York Yankees finished a homestand on Sunday with a 1-5 record, which included being swept by the Cincinnati Reds. They have shown both offensive and defensive struggles during this losing streak.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has been hoping for a turnaround in Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Discussing the team’s struggles, Cashman said:

"There's concern. It's my job to be in a position to never assume anything. Ultimately today's a new day. We're hoping to get back on track today. (0:24)"
"It was a tidal wave of success here for the first two months and then you closed out June into July in a really rough patch for an extended period of time. We got to be playing better than we currently are right now. (3:16) "

At the time of writing, the Rays maintain a 4-1 lead against the Yankees as they enter the sixth inning. The Yankees' lone run was brought in by Juan Soto on Gleyber Torres' single in the first inning.
