"Welp there goes the history books"; "It's over!" - MLB fans react as White Sox halt record-breaking losing streak against A's
They have done it! The Chicago White Sox have finally won a game, ending their 21-game losing streak. The White Sox ended the streak after beating the Oakland Athletics 5-1 on Tuesday.
Chicago fans have been subjected to plenty of trolling over the last few weeks, but they finally have some respite as the franchise was able to stop their losing skid. They were just two games away from tying the worst losing streak in MLB history by the Philadelphia Phillies (23) in 1961.
However, several MLB fans made sarcastic comments at the ChiSox for failing to break that infamous record of 23 defeats on the trot.
"It's over! They've climbed the ladder! (They won a baseball game)."
"Welp there goes the history books, but congrats!"
"G*d damnit. The dream is dead. The White Sox blow the only cool thing they have going for them this year," wrote a disgruntled fan.
One fan blamed the A's for ruining what would have been a new record losing skid.
"I think I speak for everyone when I say we are extremely disappointed in the A’s tonight," mocked a fan.
Several fans also enjoyed the team finally win a game.
"The win streak starts now!" wrote a fan.
"Hottest team in baseball since today," chimed another fan.
Chicago manager Pedro Grifol expressed relief after his team finally ended their wretched losing streak, the longest in American League history.
"Any time you win it's great. Anytime you win when you lose 21 in a row it's even better," manager Pedro Grifol told reporters per MLB.com. "I'm proud of these guys. They kept going, they just keep coming to the ballpark every day to play hard and they care for each other.
Jonathan Cannon pulls Chicago White Sox from despair after solid outing
Rookie starter Jonathan Cannon was the difference for the White Sox during Tuesday's game at Oakland Coliseum. Cannon went six innings deep, restricting the hosts to just one run and striking out five.
"I think Cannon's got that 'it' factor, and what I mean by that is he's got that will to succeed," Grifol said. "It almost looked like this wasn't going to continue on his watch. That's what it felt like.
The rookie was also on hand to end the White Sox's 14-game losing streak earlier this season. He has been one of the standout performers for Chicago despite the team's underwhelming record this season. After getting the win against the A's, Cannon improved to 2-5 on the season with a 3.91 ERA and 51 strikeouts.
