What happened to Corey Seager? All you need to know about Rangers star’s injury update
The 2024 season could well be over for Corey Seager after the Texas Rangers placed him on the 10-day IL for a hip issue. The severity of the injury has not been confirmed, but Seager may be shut down for the rest of the season to help him recuperate fully for next season. The Rangers are virtually out of the playoff race, so there is little incentive to rush the shortstop back onto the field.
Corey Seager had signed with the Rangers on a 10-year, $325 million deal in 2022. Seager posted his best regular season in the MLB last year and finished as the runner-up to Shohei Ohtani in the American League MVP voting. He then mashed six home runs in 17 postseason games to lead the Rangers to their first World Series title and was named the MVP.
On Wednesday, the Texas Rangers general manager Chris Young announced to reporters that Corey Seager was placed on the 10-day injured list due to discomfort in his right hip.
"What that means in terms of timeline, and obviously the point of the season where we are, I can't really predict as to when he'll be back,” Young said.
“But nonetheless, we think it's very prudent to make sure we get Corey right," Young added. "He's such an important part of our team, and we want to make sure he remains healthy moving forward."
Over the past week, Corey Seager had made just three starts at shortstop, with Josh Smith, Jonathan Ornelas, and Ezequiel Duran all receiving playing time in that position. Meanwhile, outfielder Sandro Fabian is likely to get called up to the majors and fill up the roster spot.
You can’t miss two offseasons in a row: Corey Seager
Although Corey Seager started for the Texas Rangers on Opening Day earlier this season, he had only played three games in spring training after undergoing hernia surgery in January. Seager feels that being injured in the offseason and missing time during spring training has influenced his approach toward the latest injury.
"You can’t miss two offseasons in a row,” Seager said. “You've got to be healthy and get back into working out and getting into shape. I didn’t really have a build-up last year coming into the season, so it’s something that I need to have coming into the next [season].”
"You want to be out there with your guys,” he added. “We’re finally starting to play some good baseball and this isn’t the time you want to miss. It’s frustrating. … You want to get back out there. We’ll see, though. I hope [I’ll play again this season]."
Despite battling to stay healthy, Seager has been the best player for the Rangers this year with 5.0 bWAR. He has batted .278/.353/.512 with 30 home runs, 71 RBIs, and an OPS+ of 144.
