What happened to Corey Seager? Rangers' slim postseason hopes dealt blow with All-Star set to miss rest of 2024 season

Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager will not go up to the plate for the rest of the season. On Thursday, Rangers general manager Chris Young confirmed that Seager would undergo surgery for a sports hernia and look to return next year.

The Rangers placed Seager on the 10-day injured list, but discomfort in his right hip continued. Young announced that Seager would undergo the surgery on Friday.

“Obviously a tough decision but with where we are at this point in the season, felt like it was a prudent decision in order for him to make a full recovery, have a strong offseason and be ready for spring training,” Young told the media.

Seager has been on the injured list since Sept. 2. It's not the first time the All-Star has dealt with such an injury. Seager underwent surgery for a sports hernia on his left side in January.

Corey Seager's absence could cost the Rangers

It's been a challenging ride for the World Series champions, and Seager's injury has made matters worse. The Rangers are eight games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West and their already slim hopes of making the playoffs have been dealt a blow.

Seager has been outstanding, especially in the playoffs. The World Series MVP helped the Rangers win the title last season.

Seager was also a crucial part of the playoffs during his stint with the Dodgers.

Seager smashed 30 home runs at a clip of .278 this season. The shortstop has a .353 OBP with a .865 OPS. In 475 appearances at the plate, Seager recorded 74 RBIs and drove in 68 runs with one stolen base.

The Rangers are currently in a tough spot with a 70-76 record. The club is four games behind the Seattle Mariners and six games behind the .500 mark.
