"When your franchise doesn’t make the World Series in 15 years" - Jose Canseco reacts to Alex Rodriguez being honored at Yankees Old-Timers' Day
New York Yankees icon Alex Rodriguez has been invited for the 15th anniversary of the team's last World Series triumph, at the 76th Old-Timers' Day at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 24.
Rodriguez, who bid farewell to baseball almost eight years ago, has earned his first invitation to the event celebrated by the franchise every year. However, former Yankee Jose Canseco is not too thrilled about Alex Rodriguez's invitation. Canseco reacted to the news, taking a subtle jibe at the Yankees.
"This is what happens when your franchise doesn’t make the World Series in 15 years."
Canseco, who has been a polarizing figure among baseball fans after admitting to using PEDs during his MLB career, seems to hold a grudge against the Yankees and their former players.
He took a jibe at a New York Yankees lineup last month and followed up with pointed comments over former Yankees captain Derek Jeter, calling him the most overrated shortstop in MLB history.
Canseco, a two-time World Series winner, is widely renowned for his stint with the Oakland Athletics but also had a brief tenure in the Bronx with the Yankees in 2000. He shared a clip of his first home run in pinstripes on his debut for the Bronx Bombers.
"24 years ago, today, I made my debut with the Yankees. In the bottom of the 4th inning, I hit a home run off the left field upper deck at the old Yankees Stadium. Great memories."
Alex Rodriguez joins several Yankees icons for Old Timer's Day
Alex Rodriguez's former Yankees teammates, part of the 2009 World Series winning roster, have also been invited to the 76th anniversary of the Old Timer's Day.
Eighteen members of the “Mission 27” team, featuring former captain and icon Derek Jeter and Hall of Fame pitcher Mariano Rivera, will grace the event.
Meanwhile, Alex Rodriguez will be joined by seven other former Yankees players who have been invited to the event for the first time. They are A.J. Burnett, Francisco Cervelli, Phil Coke, Eric Hinske, Damaso Marte, José Molina and CC Sabathia.
