When will Liam Hendriks return? MLB analyst shares possible date for Red Sox All-Star pitcher's comeback
The Boston Red Sox received a crucial update as All-Star closer Liam Hendriks is nearing a possible MLB return. The three-time All-Star has yet to pitch for the team, but he might not be too far from doing so.
Hendriks had a Tommy John surgery after he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in 2023. He has been out for the past 13 months. However, since Aug. 18, he has started his rehab session and has had three outings.
According to MLB analyst Chris Cotillo, the 35-year-old pitcher is progressing well and is eyeing a possible return in September.
"Sept. 6 would be a nice one," Hendriks said. "It’s the day I debuted 13 years ago. That would be a nice one, but at the end of the day, if I’m not ready, I’m not ready. If I am, I am. It’s not like a hard date I want to be back for. Is there a little added incentive? For sure. But it’s not a do-or-die or I need to be back by that day. I’m not going to set an ultimatum for anyone.”
Hendriks pitched a 1-2-3 inning and also allowed a hit and a walk during his rehab assignment on Aug 18. He entered the sixth inning for the Portland Sea Dogs, striking out two and conceding a run as he had a throwing error.
Will the Red Sox make it to the postseason? Taking a closer look
Entering Wednesday night's games. the Boston Red Sox (69-64) are unlikely to win the AL East despite a solid season. The New York Yankees (78-55) are nine games ahead of the Red Sox, with the Baltimore Orioles (77-56) eight games ahead.
However, Boston has a chance to make it to the postseason. The Red Sox are 3.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins (72-60) for making it to the third and final AL wild-card spot.
Although Liam Hendriks has said he is eyeing a September return, that is not concrete. However, his return should surely provide some more strength in the bullpen.
