"Yankees are cooked";"Glad it wasn't Dodgers" - Fans react as Juan Soto dusts Shohei Ohtani's record with 15-year $765,000,000 Mets deal
Juan Soto's free agency saga came to an end in record-breaking fashion as the superstar slugger has signed an MLB-record 15-year $765,000,000 deal with the New York Mets.
MLB insider Jeff Passan first broke the news on Sunday and the reports were confirmed by other sources too. Soto's deal broke the largest contract in MLB history, set by the Los Angeles Dodgers' $700 million offer over 10 years for Shohei Ohtani last offseason.
Juan Soto's deal also included a $75 million signing bonus.
Baseball fans reacted to the record-breaking deal, with a fan taking a shot at the New York Yankees, one of the other frontrunners for Soto.
"Yankees are cooked without Soto."
Another fan was glad the Dominican slugger didn't join the Dodgers.
"Thank god it’s not the dodgers."
"Juan Soto wasn’t lying when he said he loved New York. Just not the team that now has a 1-man army offense," joked a fan.
"Overpaid! Not worth more than a 2 Way superstar like Ohtani," argued another fan.
"Such an over pay! Bryce Harper is better and half the price lol," mocked another fan.
Mets beat rivals Yankees to Juan Soto's signature by barest of margins
Several sources reported on Saturday that the Mets and Yankees increased their offer to over $700 million and were locked in a two-way race for the coveted free agent.
However, Steve Cohen's Mets got one over their city rivals, especially after Juan Soto's career-best season with the Yankees in 2024. According to reports, the Bronx Bombers also offered Soto $765,000,000, however, the contract was for 16 years instead of 15, bringing down the annual value to $47.5 million instead of the $51 million the All-Star will be earning with the Mets.
