Yankees & Dodgers reign supreme as most-searched sports teams in 2024 across the globe, Mets complete top 10 for MLB domination
With 2024 coming to a close, Google released lists of trending searches for different popular fields for the past year, featuring big league sides the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York Yankees. Despite no major league stars featuring in the top 10 for athletes, MLB reigned supreme when it came to the most popularly searched sports teams in the world.
AL and NL pennant winners the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers, arguably the most popular teams in the big leagues, understandably lead the charts after facing off in a hugely hyped World Series clash, coming in as the top two most searched sports teams in the world.
After a strong 2024 season where they defied the odds to make it to the NLCS, the Yankees' cross-town rivals, the New York Mets, also make an appearance on the list, at number seven.
New York Mets make the biggest deal of the offseason, reportedly sign superstar Juan Soto to biggest contract in baseball history
For baseball fans around the world, searches involving the New York Mets would surely have been common over the past few days, as strong rumors have been emerging that the Steve Cohen-owned team has sensationally convinced Dominican superstar Juan Soto to ditch the Pinstripes for Orange and Blue.
Having enjoyed a fantastic 2024 season, finishing the campaign with a .288 batting average, 41 home runs, and 109 RBIs, Soto's free agency was a hot topic for pretty much the entirety of the past year, and it went without saying that anyone looking to secure the 26-year-old's services for the prime years of his career would need to put a bumper offer on the table.
That's exactly what Steve Cohen and co. did, reportedly signing the Dominican to the largest-ever deal in baseball history, agreeing on a 15-year, $765 million contract, amounting to about $51 million a season. After impressing with their spirited performances in the recently concluded campaign, this huge move further underlines the Mets' ambition to challenge on all fronts in 2025.
