"Yankees fans were waiting for the mess up" - Max Muncy talks about how Yankee Stadium anticipated team’s misstep in WS Game 5 against Dodgers
Max Muncy and the Los Angeles Dodgers won the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees. The Dodgers clinched the best-of-seven series by winning Game 5, 7-6 and taking the series 4-1.
However, the World Series finale had its twists, starting with the Yankees taking a 5-0 lead that the Dodgers tied by scoring all their runs in the fifth inning. Recently, on a Foul Territory podcast, Max Muncy discussed the energy in the fifth inning, saying:
“I had never played at Yankee Stadium before that was actually my first time going there. Biggest thing to me and I told all the guys this was that the energy in the stadium was very weird.”
“It was almost like they were waiting for something like that to happen, they were waiting for the mess up to happen. As soon as it started happening, the energy got real weird, and we kinda just took that and ran with it. We knew we weren't gonna lose the game at that point."
The Yankees' mishap in the fifth started with Aaron Judge dropping a fly ball hit by Tommy Edman, which loaded the bases with runners on first and second. Judge’s error triggered a series of defensive mishaps, including an error by Anthony Volpe.

In the fifth inning of Game 5 of the World Series, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman singled, followed by a double by Teoscar Hernández that tied the game 5-5.
Shortly after, in the sixth, the Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton hit a sacrifice fly, giving them a one-run lead.
“I know they scored another run on us but we were like whatever It doesn’t matter. We are gonna come back and win this game. Everything shifting toward us and it was kind of like you know, it was meant to be like that almost how it felt,” Max Muncy said.
“I’m not saying that as a negative to Yankee fans. Cause I thought they were great. The previous two games they were pretty loud it was really cool to play there… I mean you talking about playing a World Series at Yankee Stadium. There is almost nothing better than that other than for me playing at Dodger stadium.”
The Dodgers tied the score in the eighth and extended it on Mookie Betts’ sacrifice fly, leading to victory.
