Yankees' GM Brian Cashman has ‘No Regrets’ on Juan Soto negotiations, dismisses suite request and security concerns
It's safe to say that General Manager Brian Cashman is a polarizing figure among New York Yankees fans. Despite making some significant moves and winning the World Series four times during his tenure as GM, the team's lack of success in recent seasons has left fans wondering if a change needs to be made.
There is a chance that his reputation with Yankees fans has not improved after the team missed out on re-signing Juan Soto in free agency. The superstar outfielder signed a 15-year, $765 million deal to join the cross-town rival New York Mets.
According to MLB insider Bryan Hoch, the polarizing GM said that he has "no regrets" about how things went with Juan Soto and his super agent Scott Boras. The New York Yankees missed out on Soto, however, it's clear that they were aggressive in the pursuit, with the team reportedly offering the four-time All-Star 16 years, $760 million.
Even though the contract offers between the Yankees and Mets were not too far off from, word leaked that there were differences over Juan Soto being given a private suite at Yankee Stadium for his family.
There were also rumors of a run-in between stadium security and a member of Soto's family that led to him joining the Mets. GM Brian Cashman does not believe that these played a factor in Juan Soto's decision however.
“Some high end players that make a lot of money for us, if they want suites, they buy them," Cashman said.
It will be interesting to see how Cashman will be viewed in the eyes of fans if the front office is unable to greatly improve the roster around star Aaron Judge and replace the void left by Juan Soto's departure.
Brian Cashman and the front office waited little time in landing their next target
Despite the brutal loss of Juan Soto to one of their biggest rivals, the New York Yankees GM wasted little time in getting back into the market, landing one of the biggest names in free agency. The Yankees agreed to an eight-year, $218 million deal with former Atlanta Braves pitcher Max Fried.
The 30-year-old Fried will help the New York Yankees create one of the best rotations in baseball by putting him alongside the likes of Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Luis Gil.
Brian Cashman and the front office still has work to do when it comes to fielding a competitive offer this upcoming season, however, by adding Max Fried, it could make another one of their pitchers expendable. The team has already been linked to the likes of Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger. If they can land one of them, it could ease the blow of losing Juan Soto.
