Yankees' Juan Soto shares frame with rising tennis star Flavio Cobolli at US Open 2024
New York Yankees star Juan Soto used his off-time to attend the ongoing 2024 US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Yanks are in the middle of the series against the St. Louis Cardinals, with both teams winning a game each before the decider on Sunday.
During his time at Arthur Ashe, Soto attended an intense game between Italy's Flavio Cobolli and Russia's Daniel Medvedev in the third-round on Saturday. Before the match, the Dominican native was on the court and posed with Cobolli.
Medvedev, the fifth seed in the tournament, would go on to beat Flavio Cobolli in straight sets: 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
Before this round, Cobolli won his first-round match against Australia's James Duckworth, followed by a win against Belgium's Zizou Bergs in the second round.
Juan Soto and Aaron Judge get into another exclusive club after explosive August
The hitting duo of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge have struck fear among MLB teams after they exploded big time in August. Saturday's 6-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals capped off a historic month for the Yanks duo.
Soto clubbed 10 home runs and 20 walks, while Judge smashed 12 home runs and 25 walks. Analyst Sarah Langs noted that the duo are only the third pair of teammates in MLB history to have at least 10 home runs and 20 walks in a month.
Moreover, they are the first since the Boston Red Sox duo of Ted Williams and Vern Stephens did so in August 1949. The first pair to accomplish the feat were the famous Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in July 1931.
Juan Soto joined New York after being traded by the San Diego Padres in the offseason. Soto is on expiring contract and is making this year count, hitting .292 with 37 home runs, 96 RBI, five stolen bases and a 1.010 OPS.
His free agency is expected to surpass Shohei Ohtani's 10-year, $700 million (98% deferred) contract signed with the Dodgers last offseason.
