Yankees manager Aaron Boone makes big announcement on Nestor Cortes’ potential return to World Series roster
The New York Yankees could be bolstered by major reinforcements heading into the World Series as Nestor Cortes could find himself on the team's roster. The Yankees' postseason roster has strengthened each round, with veterans Anthony Rizzo and Marcus Stroman joining the club in the ALCS, after missing the first round.
Now, it seems Nestor Cortes could be the next veteran to join the New York Yankees as they pursue their first World Series title since 2009. Manager Aaron Boone has provided fans with hope regarding the 29-year-old's potential inclusion on the roster.
According to Boone, Cortes is on track to likely make the team's World Series roster. The veteran pitcher has been recovering from a flexor strain in his left elbow, and if he continues with his current momentum, it appears that he could find himself on the roster.
“There is a decent chance," Aaron Boone said of Cortes' potential placement on the New York Yankees World Series roster.
Although Nestor Cortes has been inconsistent at times, adding a player with a proven track record of success at this stage of the season can only benefit the club. That being said, Cortes will need to prove that he is strong enough and healthy enough to take up one of those valuable roster spots.
"I think there is a good chance of it. He is scheduled to throw another live tomorrow," Boone said of the immediate plans for Nestor.
It remains to be seen how the New York Yankees with use Nestor Cortes if he is indeed added to the roster. Given his time off while recovering from injury, his usage, role and potential innings limitations are something that the team will need to figure out if he is deemed ready to roll.
Nestor Cortes' potential addition to the roster could be a major boost for the pitching staff
It won't matter if Cortes will return as a starting pitcher or join the team's bullpen, adding a solid left-handed star should be a major boost for the club. Unfortunately for the Yankees, reliever Ian Hamilton will no longer be available for the rest of the playoffs after a calf injury led to him being removed from the club's ALCS (and World Series) roster.
Hamilton was replaced by Mark Leiter Jr. on the roster, so it could make sense that the spot could eventually go to Cortes. This would not only be considered an upgrade but would also provide the Bronx Bombers with another southpaw to deploy against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
