Yankees star Darryl Strawberry opens up about fan boos to be a source of inspiration during his impressive career
Darryl Strawberry, the former New York Yankees star, has opened up about how fan boos helped shape him into one of the most impressive players in baseball history. He's considered one of the best outfielders of his generation and one of the top prospects of the 1980s. According to Strawberry, playing in New York was unique due to the fans, who he says, helped made him the player he became.
Strawberry says that the pressure to perform in New York is much greater than in other cities. High expectations and intense scrutiny from fans and media made him strive to be the best. The boos and criticism were a source of inspiration for him, pushing him to work harder and prove his critics wrong.
He said that the environment in New York was different from other places and that the fans were more passionate and knowledgeable about the game. That made him want to play better and give his best every time he stepped onto the field.
Darryl Strawberry spoke to NY Post columnist Mark Sanchez, where he opened up about his experience playing for the Yankees. He says that playing in New York pushed him to become a better player and that the boos and criticism motivated him to work harder and prove his critics wrong:
“The difference in playing in New York is just the fans. They have great knowledge about the game. So they are going to let you know that you suck. That’s something you have to learn how to deal with. … They made me a tremendous player because of that.”
Darryl Strawberry admits his regret at leaving New York to play in West Coast
In the winter of 1990, Darryl Strawberry found himself in a similar position to Aaron Judge this year. Unlike Judge, though, he decided to move to the West Coast and join the Los Angeles Dodgers in a lucrative deal.
Although he had a good season there in 1991, his numbers dwindled considerably after that. After four years away from New York, Strawberry sought a move back and joined the New York Yankees in 1995.
Explaining his reasoning for his love for New York, he said:
“You just don’t leave New York. It’s the greatest place to play. The market is incredible. And when you win here, it’s forever.”
Darryl Strawberry's legacy as a baseball player is tied with the city of New York, where he won three World Series titles, one with the Mets and two with the Yankees.
