“You fire Boone, and you hire him”- Tommy Lugauer names shocking candidate to replace Aaron Boone at Yankees after team's recent slump
After the New York Yankees dropped Tuesday's game 5-3 against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Bronx faithful are starting to worry. The Yankees are now 3-7 in their last 10 games and a WFAN producer thinks manager Aaron Boone needs to be replaced by someone who wants to finish his story.
On Monday, WFAN’s "Evan & Tiki" show discussed the Yankees' recent slump and whether it requires any changes to keep the momentum going into the postseason:
"You look at their record and say, ‘They shouldn’t be desperate,'" co-host Evan Roberts said. “I look at their record and say, ‘Hey, they’re entrenched in a Wild Card spot. They shouldn’t be desperate.' But to the Yankee fan, they feel desperate, and that’s what desperate teams do, and there is a track record where — it works to a certain extent."
The show's executive producer, Tommy Lugauer, then suggested replacing Boone with former New York Mets manager Buck Showalter:
“There’s a manager sitting at home right now that wants to finish his story,” Lugauer said. “And his name is … Buck. Showalter. Yankee fans would love it, you know Buck wants to win, he wants to win with the Yankees.
“You fire Boone, and you hire Buck Showalter to finish his story. You fire Boone, and you hire Buck Showalter to finish his story,” Lugauer added.
Tommy Lugauer was serious about his thoughts of replacing Aaron Boone with Buck Showalter as Yankees manager
Many fans thought online that it was just a trolling remark from Lugauer to the Mets, but it seems he was serious after he reiterated his comments in Monday's post on X/Twitter:
“It’s time for Buck Showalter to finish his story with the Yankees,” Lugauer wrote on X.
Buck Showalter has managed 22 seasons in the MLB but he is still without a World Series title. He previously managed the Yankees from 1992 to 1995, and most recently, he managed the Mets in 2023 before being dismissed on account of a poor season. He has been crowned the Manager of the Year four times in his managerial career so far.
As for a replacement, this doesn't seem likely to happen anytime soon. Boone has arguably done a good job so far this season, leading the Yankees to a 55-38 record, well on pace to cross the 100-win mark. They currently trail the Baltimore Orioles (57-34) in the AL East standings.
