MLB Trade Deadline: 3 teams who could land James Paxton after the player was DFA'd by Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers have designated veteran starting pitcher James Paxton for assignment this Monday. The team is bringing back two other key pitchers, Clayton Kershaw and Tyler Glasnow.
Kershaw will pitch on Wednesday while Glasnow will start on Thursday during the games against the San Francisco Giants, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
So far this 2024 season, James Paxton has recorded 8 wins and 2 losses, along with a 4.43 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 89⅓ innings. The Dodgers signed him to a one-year contract for $7 million in January.
Although, at 35 years old, he is not as dominant as he once was, there are still several teams that could be interested in him before the trade deadline on July 30.
3 teams who could potentially bring in James Paxton before the trade deadline
#1 Boston Red Sox
Although the Boston Red Sox have lost their spot in the AL Wild Card race, they are still aiming for the playoffs. The team is third in the AL East, just behind the Yankees and needs more starting pitchers to boost their chances for October.
James Paxton was with the Boston Red Sox from 2021 to 2023 and signed with the Dodgers after becoming a free agent last year. Boston could either claim him off waivers or trade for him at a low cost to bring him back to the team.
#2 Milwaukee Brewers
The Milwaukee Brewers need to strengthen their pitching staff for the playoffs. With a veteran pitcher like James Paxton available, the Brewers could use his experience to boost their chances in the postseason.
The southpaw can add depth to their injury-riddled pitching rotation. The Brewers, who were expecting to give up a lot of top prospects to address their pitching needs, can now get Paxton for free by claiming him off waivers.
#3 Minnesota Twins
With the trade deadline approaching, the Minnesota Twins, who are rumored to be interested in acquiring starting pitching, could be a team to land James Paxton. He can add stability to their rotation, which they need with Chris Paddack on IL.
The club has been limited in spending this season because of financial issues with their TV deal. James Paxton would be a good addition as a fourth starter to help their pitching depth.
